Janumet and Janumet XR

Janumet (sitagliptin and metformin) is a type 2 diabetes oral medication in the DPP-4 inhibitor class of drugs. It lowers blood glucose by slowing the inactivation of GLP-1, a compound in the body that lowers blood glucose levels, and lowers the amount of glucose produced by the liver.

It is approved for adults with type 2 diabetes.

  • Janumet is used to improve blood glucose in adults with type 2 diabetes by decreasing glucose production in the liver and absorption of glucose by the intestines, as well as regulating the body's levels of insulin production after eating.
  • It is not used to treat type 1 diabetes.
  • Janumet should be taken with meals and according to your doctor's instructions.
  • Common Janumet side effects may include low blood glucose (if you also use insulin or another oral diabetes medication), upset stomach, indigestion, gas, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, headache, weakness, or cold-like symptoms such as runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, or sore throat.
  • Common side effects include: nausea, upset stomach, diarrhea, headache, or cold-like symptoms.
