Acarbose is an oral medication in the alpha-glucosidase inhibitor class of drugs. It blocks the breakdown of starches in the intestines, lowering the rise in blood glucose after meals.

  • Acarbose delays your body's digestion of carbohydrates to slow the absorption of glucose that passes into your blood after a meal. This prevents periods of hyperglycemia and helps to improve blood glucose management in adults with type 2 diabetes.

  • Acarbose is usually taken three times per day with the first bite of each main meals with an initial dose of 25 mg by mouth. A usual maintenance dose is 50–100 mg by mouth three times a day.
