Yes, there are BGMs that do not require a prescription and can be bought over the counter. Also check with your medical insurance to find out which BGM and test strips are covered.
It is recommended to keep a BGM as a back-up even if your continuous glucose monitor (CGM) does not require calibration. A BGM is also useful if your CGM stops working or if you need to double check to confirm an unexpected glucose level.
