FAQs About Low Glucose Products

Glucose tablets, gels, and liquids are quick-acting carbs that raise low blood glucose quickly. They are packaged as chewable fruit-flavored tablets, small gel packs, and ready-to-drink liquids. Follow the 15-15 rule, the recommended approach to treat low glucose.

Hypoglycemia is when blood glucose drops below 70 mg/dL, causing shakiness, sweating, or confusion. The 15-15 Rule helps fix it fast:

  • Check glucose: If below 70 mg/dL, act now.
  • Take 15 grams of fast-acting carbs: Eat/drink:
    • 3–4 glucose tablets
    • ½ cup juice or regular soda
    • 1 Tbsp sugar or honey
    • Glucose gel tube
  • Wait 15 minutes: Let carbs work.
  • Recheck glucose:
    • Above 70 mg/dL? Eat a small carb/protein snack.
    • Still low? Repeat 15 grams, wait, and recheck.
  • Get help: If still below 55 mg/dL after two tries or you can’t swallow, use glucagon and call 911.

Fast-acting carbs should be used if you have low blood glucose and are awake, alert, and able to swallow. Glucagon should be used when you cannot swallow and/or are unconscious.
