Pioglitazone (Actos) is an oral medication in the thiazolidinedione (TZD) class of drugs indicated for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. It helps insulin work better in muscle and fat cells and lowers blood glucose production in the liver.

Actos is approved for adults with type 2 diabetes. It is not for treating type 1 diabetes. Common side effects may include headache, muscle pain, or cold-like symptoms.

  • Patients usually take Actos once a day. It may be taken with or without food.
  • For a patient without congestive heart failure, the initial dose is usually 15 or 30 mg taken by mouth once a day.
  • For a patient with congestive heart failure, the initial dose is usually 15 mg taken by mouth once a day.
  • Common side effects may include weight gain and fluid retention (edema).
