Welchol (colesevelam HCI) is a type 2 diabetes oral medication in the bile acid sequestrant class of drugs. It lowers “bad” LDL cholesterol and A1C levels. Welchol is also available in oral suspension.

Welchol is approved for adults with type 2 diabetes. It is also approved for adults and children (10-17 years old) with heterozygous familial hypercholesterolemia (HeFH), a genetic condition causing high cholesterol.

  • While Welchol lowers "bad" LDL cholesterol in the blood, it is also used to improve blood glucose management in adults with type 2 diabetes. It is not for treating type 1 diabetes.
  • Welchol is usually taken with a meal and a full glass of water or other liquid.
  • It may be taken either as several tablets or as a powder mixed with 8 ounces of water, juice, or a diet soft drink.
  • Common side effects may include constipation, nausea, or upset stomach.
