Infusion Sets

Insulin pumps that use tubing require pump-specific infusion sets approved for the device to move insulin to the body. Flexible tubing carries insulin from the pump reservoir to a needle or cannula secured just beneath the skin. The infusion sets are changed out following the manufacturer's instructions.

FAQs About Infusion Sets

Infusion sets can be worn on the abdomen, upper buttocks, hips, upper arms, or upper legs. Rotating between these sites on the body helps prevent scar tissue and helps with insulin absorption.

Infusion sets connect an insulin pump to your body, delivering insulin through a small tube (cannula) under your skin. They’re changed about every two to three days. Here’s how they differ:

  1. Cannula type:
    • Soft (Teflon): Flexible
    • Steel: Rigid
  2. Insertion angle:
    • Straight (90 degrees)
    • Angled (20–45 degrees)
  3. Cannula length:
    • Short (6 mm)
    • Medium (9 mm)
    • Long (13 mm+)
  4. Tubing Length:
    • Short (18–23 in)
    • Long (32–43 in)
  5. Insertion method:
    • Manual: Inserted by hand
    • Inserter: Inserted with a tool
  6. Connector:
    • Universal
    • Brand-specific
