Glimepiride

Glimepiride is in the sulfonylurea class of diabetes drugs. It helps beta cells in the pancreas release more insulin.

Glimepiride is approved for adults with type 2 diabetes. It is only available as a generic medication. It was previously sold under the brand name Amaryl by Sanofi.

  • Glimepiride is used to improve blood glucose management in adults with type 2 diabetes.
  • It is not for treating type 1 diabetes.
  • Glimepiride is usually taken once a day with the first main meal of the day and a full glass of water.
  • The usual initial dose of Glimepiride is 1–2 mg taken by mouth once a day, with maintenance doses incrementally increased as needed up to a maximum dose of 8 mg daily.
  • Common side effects may include hypoglycemia, weight gain, and skin reactions.
