Glucotrol XL

Part of the sulfonylurea class of diabetes drugs, Glucotrol XL (glipizide) helps beta cells in the pancreas release more insulin. It is taken with breakfast or the first meal of the day.

Glucotrol XL is approved for adults with type 2 diabetes.

  • Glucotrol XL improves blood glucose management in adults with type 2 diabetes by helping the pancreas produce insulin.
  • It is not for treating type 1 diabetes.
  • An initial dose of Glucotrol XL is usually 5 mg taken by mouth once daily with the first meal of the day.
  • The maximum recommended dose is 20 mg.
  • Common side effects may include dizziness, diarrhea, nervousness, tremor, hypoglycemia (or low blood sugar), and flatulence. It is important to not skip meals due to the risk of hypoglycemia.
