CGMs

Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) are devices that monitor blood glucose (blood sugar) levels in users throughout the day without the need for fingersticks. Based on CGM type, users can monitor glucose in real time or by scanning a glucose sensor with a reader. CGMs can alert you when your glucose is rising or falling rapidly, and when your glucose hits a high or low limit, giving you advanced warning to prevent low or high blood glucose. Along with allowing you to track out of target readings, they see trends for past blood glucose, where they currently are, and show trend arrows to see what direction your blood glucose is headed. These glucose readings include time in range (the amount time your blood glucose is within target), which helps inform you and your care team about necessary changes in your care plan.

Through wireless capability, some brands of CGMs connect via Bluetooth to compatible smart devices including phones and insulin pumps. This connectivity, when paired to a hybrid closed-loop pump, allows the pump to utilize CGM data to adjust or even stop insulin delivery based on glucose.
