INVOKANA (canagliflozin)

Janssen Pharmaceuticals, Inc.

Invokana (canagliflozin) is a type 2 diabetes oral medication in the SGLT-2 inhibitor class of drugs. It blocks glucose from being reabsorbed by the kidneys. Excess glucose is released in the urine. Invokana should be taken in the morning, and increased water intake throughout the day is recommended. Medications in the SGLT-2 inhibitor class may offer heart and kidney benefits for people with cardiovascular disease. Talk to your doctor about your options and whether switching to one of these drugs may help you. Because type 2 diabetes medications act in different ways to lower blood glucose levels, providers will often prescribe multiple drugs to a patient. Several of the more popular medications are available in combination with other oral drugs in a single pill. Each medication has its own side effects. Read labels carefully. Consult your physician if you have congestive heart failure.
